Actually, for a long time it was the state of Hawaii's decision. They released the short form, which is good enough proof to get a passport, driver's license, voting card, and anything else, and THEY were the ones who said "that's our policy; we don't release long-form certificates. This should be good enough. Stop asking." The Governor himself vouched for it.

But the birthers kept saying "OBAMA refuses to release it," so at a certain point the WH must have contacted the state of Hawaii and gotten them to change their policy this once.

Contrast that with Romney, who has ALWAYS had the power to release his taxes.

Kennedy, though he ran for president in '76, was not the nominee. EVERY major-party nominee for president has released 8-12 years of tax returns since Romney's father himself set that standard. That makes Romney's refusal a headscratcher.

If it was really about "none of your business," he wouldn't have released 2010 and 2011. He did. But not 2009 or prior years. He's bringing the "why the hell not?" questions on his own head.

Other prominent politicians have refused to release their tax returns... Senator Ted Kennedy among them. Was Kennedy trying to hide something? I doubt... he just felt it was really no one's damned business. Which it wasn't.>

You're joking, right? Obama provided legal evidence that he was a citizen, the same evidence every other presidential candidate supplies. And even after the long form was provided, the Birthers still insist he isn't American.

It's true, Romney isn't legally required to release those incriminating tax returns. But it is "usual and customary" to release them.

Having his CPA release his tax rates but not the returns for those years just makes his actions even more suspicious. There is no doubt that he covering something up, something really, really bad. Some thing that would cost him the election.

If every president before Obama had release their birth certificate and he didn't then I would agree with you.

In theory the people have the right to know that the president meets the legal requirements to be president. That's why the HI governor ( a republican ) certified that Obama was born there.

In Romney's case he has already been caught cheating on his taxes and lying about it.

That he's still a contender says a great deal about today's "conservatives". I think they'd vote for Nixon if he was the candidate.
