I am STILL reading The Fiery Cross by D. Gabaldon It's very good but I end up spending too much time on LP and not enough time reading.

Gate of Ivrel was so-so. I am learning how incredibly picky I am about fantasy. Well, a little more before I switch to french for a while and then back to classics.

I am currently reading:Nine Princes in Amber by Roger Zelazny.

Well yes it is fairly long but the next book is Diana Gabaldon's Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade which as well as being fairly long it is tall and wide so physically will not go in my bag well.

I hope you're enjoying it. The first Amber series (Nine Princes, Guns of Avalon, Sign of the Unicorn, Hand of Oberon, Courts of Chaos) is one of my all-time, absolute favorites. :)

3U2, there is a House of Mirth movie? I love the book (so upbeat, haha). I also loved The Age of Innoncence (good movie as well).I keep meaning to read Ethan Fromme.

It was a fast, somewhat strange read and was pretty enjoyable until the last chapter. Huh? Kinda spoiled the whole book for me, but obviously lots of people liked the book as it was a best seller.

I stopped reading the Julie Andrews biography and The Once and Future King due to boredom.

I am currently reading "A Year in the Merde" by Stephen Clarke which I got for my birthday and it's so-so. There are occasional moments of hilarity. Maybe it would be a better read if I was a womanizing Brit?

One word of warning on the Amber novels: Zelazny wrote a series of five books, which I think of as basically one novel in five volumes. I think they're some of the greatest fantasy writing ever, but YMMV. Then, some years later, he wrote a mediocre sequel, which also stretches over five volumes. The "omnibus" editions I've seen have all 10 books, which means they're pretty much 50% wasted space.

For fantasy, my favorite authors are: Tad Williams, Anne McCaffrey, Robert Jordan, Sharon Shinn, JK Rowling, and then CS Lewis, Frank Herbert, Orson Scott Card, and Madeline L'Engel. Who do you like best?

(I don't mean to take over the topic, but love to talk books.)

I just looked at your reading list off your home page, alexbook. WOW!! I wish I had more time to read and I'd say I read more than any other vet student. How do you read things so quickly? My roommate reads a lot faster than I do too. I hope we get to meet eventually. :)

Anyone else read "The Host"? Opinions?

Alex I would be interested in hearing your thoughts about The Host when you finish it!

Right now I'm reading Breaking Dawn (last book in the Twilight Saga) as well as Just Listen by Sarah Dessen. Next on the list are Lock & Key (Sarah Dessen), A Break With Charity (Ann Rinaldi), My Sister's Keeper (Jody Picoult) and The 10th Circle (Jody Picoult). I really need to catch up on my Nicholas Sparks books. I have nearly all of them and have only had the chance to read a few. =/

I'm not actually that fast a reader in terms of words per minute, but I do tend to spend a lot more time reading than most people I know. It's one of the advantages of taking the bus to work. I also go through phases of more or less TV watching.

    >>Who do you like best?<<

Ten authors I like, off the top of my head: Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, C. M. Kornbluth, Robert Silverberg (science fiction); Neil Gaiman, Roger Zelazny, J. R. R. Tolkien (fantasy); Dorothy L. Sayers, Donna Andrews (mystery); Daniel Handler ("literary" & children's). Ask me again next week and I may answer differently. ;-)

I'm enjoying it so far. It's certainly not a page-turning adventure novel, but it's holding my attention. I'll write more when I've finished.

Right now I'm reading Peter and the Starcatchers with my daughter (I'm rereading it, but she's never read it). We love this series; haven't read the 3rd one yet, though, but we just ordered it. My daughter is 15 and we still get to read together! We alternate who reads to whom, and who picks what we read. She's reading the Narnia stories to me on her turn, so we just finished the Voyage of the Dawn Treader. I recently read The Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion to her.

Also, my wife and I are reading the complete collection of Sherlock Holmes right now. Currently in the middle of "Valley of Fear". We recently read The Three Musketeers. Love the Musketeers! The size of the book always intimidated me, but man was it worth it!

Also, I'm reading a little book by John Calvin called Truth for All Time, and my Bible.
