Just curious here......dave, would you favor a world without: passports, visas, borders, consulates, nationality, independent armies, independent currencies or varied dialects/verbal and written languages?

I have to say after being blessed with multiple foreign travels I most definitely favor "variety" instead of a one single world culture. I enjoy absorbing(if not just tasting) different cultures.

I have to say that all of your criteria save the last one are barriers to enjoying foreign travels, foreign relations and "variety".

Are you saying you'd be unhappy living in a world without borders or passport controls? Assuming of course said world was united enough and peaceful enough to allow such a thing, I would think it would be a far better world than we have today!

Now, as far as homogenization, THAT is a bummer and yes it certainly does occur (I live across the street from a McDonalds, for chrissakes!).

But there are plenty of places on Earth that have adapted quite nicely to "cultural preservation" hand in hand with "global citizenship". Plenty of homes were the native language is spoken alongside English (which, let's face it, really is the default "world" language as it stands now).

I, like Dave, would welcome the Federation.

But even in Trek things are all nationalized, it's just BIGGER. "The Federation" is akin to the U.N. of today, with the "enemies" being the outsiders who are always looking for war (NEVER the Federation though! Good Heavens no!).

    *sigh*

In Wales, they still speak Welsh in the North, North Scotland speak gallic and wear kilts still, and in Cornwall, they have Cornish as their language, but all of them are still a part of the UK, have no border controls and use the £.

As a true believer in liberty and human rights, I would very much favour a world without passports. National identity can still exist (ever been to a pow wow in the US, or a Cinco de Mayo celebration? Perhaps Chinese New Year Fireworks.
