Between the problems with the 'new' trains from 2008, the lack of any spare parts (even with cannabalizing one of the trains to make the 'new' ones), and the regularly scheduled maintenance, it's pretty rare to see 2 trains running at any time. Add in the awkward schedule constraints (with mornings being only for DLR hotel guests and the system shutting down around the fireworks due to proximity to the fallout), and it's a very unreliable system. No, you don't NEED to rely on it for transportation, but you really can't rely on it for anything at all.
