It is a basic of brand marketability, a well known product will sell more than a lesser known one.

Anyways, picking up this thread and putting back on the lightcycle.

Do you guys think that Tron could do better this weekend then in it's initial weekend because of holiday crowds?

Like I said though, the box office shows most people aren't so concerned about who is directing it, they are going because they are already fans from the books.

Those two factors have nothing to do with each other. There are many films that had enormous box office, that are now regarded as being fairly bad movies. Heck most people I know say that Avatar was nothing but a director showing off the special effects he could use. And there are many films that didn't do well at the box office that are now considered classics, Blade Runner is ranked as the 27th most money making movie in 1982, even the original Tron did better than it (it came in 22.) Blade Runner, a classic of American Cinema was 27. Clearly a movies earnings are in no way a showing of how good the movie is.

No one is disputing this. Plenty of good films simply never click with the movie going public when first released in theaters. Fantasia is a stellar example.

The topic of the thread is, "What if TRON fails?" The implied presumption being that "fails" refers to financial failure, i.e., poor box office performance. And after the first week of its domestic release, TRON is not doing as well as many would have predicted, myself included.

It's only got three more weeks in IMAX before Green Hornet takes over, so I doubt TRON will have much shelf life in any theater after that. It really only has the next ten days to gain some ground before kids return to school, and I just don't see it doing much better than it already has.

When all is said and done, considering how much this film cost to make, I believe Disney will be labeling TRON as a fail.

Normally they have programmed urban movies for that weekend, this is the first big budget action film they have plugged into that slot, so it may do well for that period. The time after that weekend if problematic since the box office attendance goes down with everyone working and back in school.

I'm guessing there will be less competition for 3-D screens though, so maybe that was one of the factors in the studios decision to open the movie then. Also the movie has Jay Chou and in much of Asia the summer holidays occur from late February until early April, so maybe they are going to release it in the Asian market around that time period to take advantage of Jay Chou's popularity in this region.

After 10 days in theaters, TRON's total so far is about $88 mil. After next weekend when kids return to school, the attendance is going to drop off dramatically. And Green Hornet will take away most of TRON's 3D screens in mid-January.

At this rate, TRON will be lucky to finish at $150 mil domestic. Color me confused. I really thought it would do better business than this.

The thing is, as really cool as the movie is, it has two big strikes against it:

    1) the tone is sober. It's not a downer of a movie at all, but there isn't much humor in it. The Jules Verne line got the biggest laugh. Could have used a smidgen of Pirates' goofiness.

    2) the visuals are DESIGNED well, but too many effects rely on digital faces, and, sorry, in EXECUTION, they suck. They aren't Polar Express bad, but they're close. It seems like a HUGE step back from Benjamin Button. And so, the movie can't seem to catch any sort of Avatar "yes the script is simplistic, but this world has incredible verisimilitude" buzz because there's these parenthetical apologies about young Jeff Bridges.
