But then, I loved "Monsters, Inc." and really liked "Finding Nemo", and I get people who tell me they can't figure out what I like about them. I figured that I'd probably be alone in my feeling but decided to post it anyway. /cs

Of course, to spite me, both my kids watched it and loved it. Someday I will have my revenge. Oh, yes, I will.... Now back to your regularly scheduled topic.

You have to be a subscriber to read the review (I don't think it's reproduced elsewhere), but here are a few excerpts: With "Cars," Pixar's enviable streak of creative triumphs comes to a skidding stop. Despite representing another impressive technical achievement, it's the least visually interesting of the computer-animation boutique's movies, and -- in an ironic twist for a story about auto racing -- drifts slowly through its semi-arid midsection. Periodic bursts of cleverness brighten the festivities, but they're too few and far between, and the trademark humor that appeals to adults and kids often misfires. ... The question is how long it will take for Lightning to revive the town, while simultaneously learning the meaning of friendship. Alas, "too long" is the answer, and barring the boisterous antics of blue-collar comic Larry, there's not much to make the time speed by. Granted, there are amusing sight gags... but like Lightning himself, the action simply keeps running out of gas. ... Still, nothing here approaches the undersea wonder of "Finding Nemo," the childlike inspiration behind "Monsters Inc." ... -- a high standard, admittedly, but the expectation bar against which all Pixar ventures inevitably will be judged. ... Ultimately, however, those benefits are only maximized if the movie delivers, and while the inventive closing-credit animation should send patrons out smiling, that breezy detour arrives at the end of a dusty, near-two-hour ride. /cs

Originally Posted By DlandDug >>...waiting for Doug to bluster in and try to say this isn't a negative review.<< Obviously, the review ("Pixar's enviable streak of creative triumphs comes to a skidding stop.") is negative, and is part of the small chorus providing counterpoint to the rather large group that is loudly singing the praises of Cars. By no stretch of the imagination could the critical reaction to this film be considered negative. That said, if Variety's negative review resonates with this poster, that's fine with me. While I disagree, of course, I do bear in mind that what we are dealing with here are opinions over creativity. And in that realm, most opinions are valid.

I am decidedly in the minority as far as my reaction to the film, and I completely recognize that. I didn't post the excerpts to prove that I was right - the reviewer happened to be able to express my feelings better than I could, so I decided to post it. /cs

I'm left feeling empty and cheated because everyone said it was so good. The Land of Cars concept never really captured me during the previews for 'Cars' so I'm not really surprised that I didn't like it. The movie looks beautiful, the backgrounds are lush, the reflections are reflecting, the water is waterful -- the story and characters did nothing for me. Signed, Jim 'The Party Pooper' in Merced, CA
