This is a so by the numbers in some ways, and so nonsensical in others. I don't know where to begin to hate it first. There's the script -- which has not a single laugh in it. No, really, not one. There is also a major warning sign that we have a weak script here -- music that plays along to underscore whatever is happening on screen. If someone is walking on tip-toes, there's tip-toe music. If someone reacts to another character saying something, there's "purse your leaps and shake your head" music to accompany that. There is also generic "Friends" type music included to make a soundtrack CD. Matt Damon look angry and lost throughout. He knows this movie sucks, you can see it in his eyes, and you can see him asking himself, "What would Ben Stiller do with this role?" I almost felt bad for him. There is a ridiculous tacked on chase scene, plot holes large enough to drive a truck through, Kate Hudson phones in a generic role, Michael Douglas shows the comic timing that made Streets of San Francisco a laugh riot, while Owen Wilson plays Owen Wilson unconvincingly. This movie wants to be endearing. It wants to be liked. It wants to be your friend in the worst way. It gets the worst way part right.

I would totally see it again and recommend it, especially to those who like mystery, magic, and the supernatural. Fascinating story.
