OK, it's not high art, but it's what movies are supposed to be, a couple of hours of pure entertainment. I'm not sure if I'd bother buying the DVD, but I would definately watch it again. Loads of fun!

Last week, I watched the 1946 Best Picture winner "The Best Years of Our Lives". It's the story of three WWII service men returning home after the war ends, trying to adjust back into normal life after the hell they have been through. It's a long movie at just over 3 hours, but it never drags. It was ahead of its time in many ways -- I'm not sure if post traumatic stress disorder was recognized or much talked about then, but the movie captures just that. It's also remarkable for the inclusion of double-amputee Harold Russell, who had never acted before this movie, and who wound up winning a special Oscar for it. How I have missed this one all this time I don't know, but it's really one to see. Last night, I watched 1969 Best Picture winner "Midnight Cowboy." It's easy to understand how, in it's day, it would have been very shocking, but by today's standards, not quite as much. All the scenes with Voight and Hoffman are interesting to watch, but too often, the movie drifts of into a psychadelic style that really date the movie and detract a bit from the more interesting story.

It came out about the same time as the far better "The Prestige" so I can't help but compare them. In "The Prestige" there was a Jules Verne mechanicalness and gadgets revealed for many of the tricks, and the ending was surprising. In The Illusionist, the magic tricks never look anything but special effects, and the ending is not only not surprising, but reveals giant, enormous, massive plot holes and logic gaps. They also unintentionally make the heroes into bad guys, which I don't think was the intention.

It does neither particularly well -- you've seen all the funny lines already in trailers. What's left is a movie about voter fraud that stretches logic and credibility beyond reason. It's one of those movies where no one behaves the way a normal person would in various situations, instead, they do things out of character because that's what the plot requires. Rent 'The Candidate' instead. The Night Listener Comcast On Demand No snacks I think there must be two Robin Williams -- the one who signs up for stuff like RV and Man of the Year, and then the one who does interesting films like One Hour Photo, The Fisher King, and The Night Listener. I thought the film was well made, with some great performances, and you're never sure where it's going next, there's a tension throughout. I liked it a lot.

Rented the movie when it was released. Forty minutes in, I took it out of the player, back in the case, grabbed my keys, drove back to blockbuster and returned for something else. It was so bad I didn't want infecting my home any more.
