I did have a lot of trouble with Sean Penn's accent & had to turn on the CC to understand him for much of the movie. The alternate ending is really wonderful (especially if you're a Jackie Earle Haley fan, like me, lol). The Bad News Bears DVD Good movie. Liked the relationship between Amanda (Tatum O'Neal) and Buttermaker (Walter Matthau). The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training DVD This might be blasphemy, but I enjoyed this one more than the original. Could be the fact that there's more Kelly Leak, but I love this movie. My absolute favorite scene is Kelly and his dad talking things over while Kelly's shooting pool. Great performance from Jackie. Just finished: The Bad News Bears Go to Japan DVD Definitely not the best movie. It could have been really good, but the focus was more on Tony Curtis' character than on the Bears. I did really enjoy the subplot between Kelly Leak and the Japanese girl, but that was the best thing going for the film.

But once he got going into the political arena it improved greatly. As the characters jelled the plot became stronger (though still jumped around a bit) and it built up to its climax well. I thought the acting was all excellent. Penn was incredible. Franco was fine in a mellow role. I don’t think it required a lot which was fine. Emile Hirsch was great. And I know I read some people thought Diego Luna was a bit over the top. I did not see that. The character was what he was. Ms. Pill was very good as well. I think the part that resonated with me most was that I was 22 and living in Santa Cruz (very liberal town 70 miles south of SF on the coast) at the time and I was involved in our local politics to a degree. We had our own gay and lesbian unions at the Cabrillo Jr. College and UCSC as well as our own pride days and parades. I went to the SF pride Parade in 77 or 78. As it is all long ago I can’t quite remember and will have to look it up in my old journal. In any case the film brought about the spark of activism in me and I see the huge parallels between now and then. Though there seems to be more and more people on the proper “side” now.
