The staircase was very narrow (12-18" in places; 36" clear width required by code) and the guardrail only came to mid-thigh on me (probably around 28"; 40" required by code). And since it was so narrow, you really needed the rail for support, so it always left me feeling a little uneasy up there (unlike the castle walkway, where you're nowhere near the walls so it really doesn't matter how tall they are). That said, I think that most of this would be a fairly easy fix to bring up to modern standards. Yes, it would lose a lot of the charm of the structure that appeared to be built by kids, but I think it's better than having it completely closed off. Then again, there may be some ADA implications with a large overhaul, since it's obviously not wheelchair compliant in any form >>Are there still seats in the larger area off to the side (not sure what to call it) that leads up to the castle? We take a photo on those seats each year to gauge how big the kids are getting<< Yes, the benches in the front (surrounding the compass in the pavement, with the bushes behind them) are still there. Presumably they're far enough from the water's edge that people wouldn't fall in, and the large hedges would keep anybody from falling in that direction any way. It's just the semi-circle benches surrounding the banner posts on the bridge itself that have been removed

OH and take a close up pic then run back to post.

Less chance of it looking slapdashedly done.

I don't think it will look especially great, but it will be effective from a safety standpoint

But maybe all those lawyers will sleep better at night, knowing those things are installed. One thing's for sure, Aurora won't sleep any better. The fresh black railing against the sun-faded pastels of the castle make it stand out even more. I think that some gold accents could potentially help it blend in, but there's only so much it could do
