My Dad remembers no one wanting to teach the kids Polish, because that what everyone spoke when they wanted to keep "secrets." It wasn't about assimilation. So basically, it took 40-50 years for my families to treat English as their primary language, even though they were living here.

I finally got tired of people trying to make political statments in a forum dedicated to WDW. That's the only reason I ever respond to that kind of crap to begin with. I just hope it stops. I did leave almost 2 years ago now..after several forays in... I am just saying the level of discourse that was occurring here- and personal comments belongs there not here. Some people want to drag each topic thru the mud-- no issue with that as long as it doesn't start to invade very thread as some topics/comments tend to do in W/E. For years every topics turned into an attack on the CLintons-- then every topic somehow brought in Bush sucks.. just got old for me-- glad you enjoy it..but that level of political discussion belongs there, not here. Unlike some I think it has a place on LP..because as you say it is fascinating that Disney binds most of us..but politically for some the gulf could not be wider.

And just because Chicago is ridiculously expensive doesn't mean everywhere should be. --- I make it Chicago centric now because of the fact it has invaded the white house also- so it is now national in nature... as for expensive..no thank God everywhere is not as expensive as here..if so the Great Recession would be even deeper. btw-- I have lived in California as well..and within 3 years will be a Florida resident if all goes well..spent a lot of time house hunting this time for a state with no income tax and one where I don't pay $12000/year in property taxes as I near the end of employment ( full time) when I look at the national news the # of pols going to jail for corruption touches every state I see..but I do not live in other local places- yes I will give you that.
