"Christmas Wrapping"? Never heard of it.

<They actually convinced people that "My Favorite Things" is a Christmas song! Har har har har har har har!!!>

Well, it does fit in with winter-time---in which Christmas occurs. ;-) (not to mention that line about the "brown packages tied up with string")

<Oh, another one I hate, when they try to Christmas up a totally non-related song. Most recent example: From a Distance (which is one of the dumbest songs ever written to start with -- God is watching us *FROM A DISTANCE*? In whose religion is that? Is He on Mount Olympus or something?)>

Well isn't Heaven supposed to indeed be from a distance? ;-) I saw a Bette interview the other night where she spoke of how wonderful it is that FAD can be fit in as a Christmas song.

I think she had that horrendous wild red hat on too tight. ;-)

That's always bugged me too. But I think it really is the original (albeit ridiculous IMO) lyric.

I don't think it means emotionally distant. ;-)

And I've discovered this year that I don't like to hear a woman sing "O Holy Night" (at least not the recordings I've heard). Nothin' against women, I just think that it's more effective hearing a good baritone deliver it in that musical range.

But I do prefer to hear a woman sing "My Favorite Things" if that makes it any better. ;-)

I have no idea why they play it all the time on the radio as a Christmas song. I think he mentions snow once. Maybe that's why...

Oh! So that's the tie in with the holidays! lol Now that you told me the name, I think I recall that being the last line of the song...I usually don't leave it on long enough to hear that line, though!

No no no no no! First of all, you do NOT put Christmas presents in "brown paper packages tied up with string." It's colorful packages tied up in ribbons! UNDER the tree, not on it!

Secondly, the winter references in the song are way overstated. We've got the warm woolen mittens, the snowflakes that stay and the sleigh bells and the silver white winters but then they melt into springs and girls in white dresses ride cream colored ponies and eat crisp apple streudels and get bit by dogs and stung by bees and it's the Alps anyway so it's going to be a bit chilly and

Where was I? Oh yeah. Not a Christmas song.

In defense of my beloved American musical acts, I feel the need to point out that the song you're talking about was a British thing - for once in our lifetimes, it was NOT America being religo-centric. (yeah, not a real word, but you get what I mean. *smile*) :)

    *gasps*

    I love both those songs!
    (No throwing tomatoes please! LOL.)

The Waitresses were very "80s" back in the "80s" (at least in Southern California where I was) and I have a very "80s" side to me so I have always liked them.

I heard Christmas Wrapping when it was first released and it was hardly ever played so I haven't suffered the overdose that you have, mawnck. If it was overplayed where I was, I guess I was lucky enough to not have the radio on then. lol.

I do agree though that any song played to death seriously increases its chances of becoming a "least" favorite so I totally get your point on that and would probably come to hate it too if it were overplayed where I am.

In my opinion, Christmas Wrapping isn't so much a "Christmas" song per se as it is just a little story about two people running into each other at Christmas time. And I like the story. It has a good ending. :)

It is definitely not a song I play to put myself in the Christmas mood though. Its kinda like Green Bean Casserole... I like to have it once a year or so but that's about it. If I had it any more than that it wouldn't be special and I wouldn't like it.

    TDG, here is the album:

    <a href="http://play.rhapsody.com/thewaitresses/bestofthewaitresses/christmaswrapping" target="_blank">http://play.rhapsody.com/thewa
    itresses/bestofthewaitresses/christmaswrapping</a>

I'd post the lyrics here but I think mawnck and mele would probably be really annoyed with me if I did! (So I'll go post them in random singing so anyone can read the "story" in case that link doesn't work and you can't hear the song.)

(Totally off topic but I loved watching Square Pegs on t.v. when I was a kid (the whopping ONE season it was on, lol.) And "No Guilt" is a good little song!)

Well, if you wanna get real technical about it, it was co-written by Midge Ure, who's Scottish, and Bob (don't call me "Sir Bob") Geldof, who's Irish.
