From memory by the end of 1986 the Kirk posters were gone and had been replaced by Mr Bon Jovi himself. At the age of 13 I obviously didn't read papers or watch the news because I only vaguely remember the space shuttle exploding. I do remember Crocodile Dundee being a huge movie. There was also the Yom Kippur War, but that was over and done in under a month. Everything else passed pretty much under the radar as far as I was concerned. Music: I have no idea what was popular, but I didn't like it. I was mostly into show tunes. I didn't really get into rock until high school. Movies: I think the first time my brother and I ever got dropped off at the movies, instead of being taken to the movies by an adult, would have been for "Jesus Christ Superstar." Books: I was just starting to escape from the kids' section of the library. This was the year I discovered science fiction, and Isaac Asimov particularly. TV: The family would gather in the living room in the evenings to watch sitcoms and argue endlessly, and I would escape to the bedroom I shared with my brother. That was my best "alone" time. School: This was the year I realized I wasn't good enough to make the chess team. It was also the year I started really soaring ahead of the rest of the class in math. English and history were struggles, but they kept passing me. PE was torture, of course. And I got to pick my first "elective" courses ever--I went for choir and typing.
