He took the fall for his wife Linda's several ounces of pot, because she hid their stash in his belongings, thinking no one would check him. To this day, no one is really sure how he was suddenly sprung. He spent about a week or so in jail, give or take a day, and after "negotiations", was out. He wasn't allowed back for a couple of decades or so. He wrote a song about it called "Temporary Jap" that appears on his subsequent album, "McCartney II", where on the backside there's a headshot of him wearing thick round glasses that gives his face the appearance of a caricatured Japanese. If anyone cares, one of the conditions of McCartney getting married to his second wife was that he quit smoking dope. He's a life long toker. Apparently that didn't quite work out.

Back then the mindset was completely different, even though Japan was known at that time as well for beinh harsh. Let's face it. Even in 1980, McCartney was a 38 year old multi-zillionaire who was ALWAYS stoned, along with the wife. It was a way of life. Still is, apparently. The thought processes along these lines probably weren't very clear.
