Whether these things happened in the past secretly is immaterial - if we, i.e. the public, didn't know about them, then there wasn't anything we could do about it. But this stuff was front page news - and the president and his staff were on tv trying to justify doing this stuff. That's what's so outrageous - and to this day, they still think they were doing the right thing, and would do it again if we let them.
