The BS answer now spewed forth via the social media whores that the Weatherman so covets is that WDW can't close attractions because it will ruin so many 'once in a lifetime' visits. >>> More generally, I think the talking point is that guests are very disappointed when their favorite attraction is not working when they visit. Actually, I think it's claimed that repeat guests are the ones that get the most upset, as they're the ones that are a) bound to even have a "favorite" attraction in the first place, and b) bound to complain about things. There's so much for the first-time or second-time guest at WDW to see and do that I find it hard to believe that their vacation could be "ruined" by a single attraction not working. Somehow, guests at the other Disney resorts are able to get by with attractions being down. I remember when I was a kid going to DL with the family, it was always an important part of the day when we got there in the morning at the ticket booths, and saw the list of attractions that were closed that day. We went during the summer, and even then, you'd occasionally have a disappointment of Haunted Mansion or POTC being closed even though we had been looking forward to it all year, but it's not as if it "ruined" the visit - after all, we were still at DL, right? And what do guests think of the results of not taking attractions down for annual maintenance? The result is that there always seem to be things broken on attractions. I'll use the example I used before of WDW's Haunted Mansion before the big unscheduled refurb a few years ago: instead of doing the maintenance when it should have been done, it was left to rot. So, rather than disappointing guests for a few weeks, it gave a significantly sub-par experience for months at a time if not longer toward the end. I realize this is perhaps a worst-case scenario, but it really was atrocious, and I think a textbook example of what can happen to other attractions if they are put into a "run until failure" mode. P.S. - Generally speaking, I don't like it when people come up with derogatory nicknames for people, but I have to say that every time you refer to The Weatherman, it makes me laugh. And I don't even completely get the reference.

In some cases, things can be repaired overnight. In other cases, something like a broken AA can be removed overnight, taken back to the shop for repairs, then be re-installed during another overnight cycle. In other cases where something may need to be taken apart for awhile, why can't a maintenance closure of just a few days be scheduled, such that people can plan their visits around the closure once they get there and still not miss things? I think I know the answer: It's my belief that the real motivation for this change has been to reduce the maintenance budget, not increase guest satisfaction. If they moved the maintenance to a lot more overnight work and/or shorter closures, they may not end up saving all that much money, and there would be a lot more 3rd shift and overtime labor.

If they can spare the cost, it's spared, and quality suffers.

I can remember finding Pirates or the HM or the Matterhorn closed, and just for a second we were like "AUUUUGGGHHHH!!!" And then we got over it and went in and enjoyed the crap out of everything that was still open! Ahh, them magical days before the internets . . .
