It's because people are copying and pasting from my original post. For some reason the links report an error when they are copied and pasted that way.

Going back to post 85, here are the images being discussed:

    Original artwork...

    <a href="http://progresscityusa.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/dca-4.jpg" target="_blank">http://progresscityusa.com/wp-...ca-4.jpg</a>

    Latest artwork...

    <a href="http://www.originald.com/pics/updates/2009-08-06/DCA/Large/IMG_0284.JPG" target="_blank">http://www.originald.com/pics/...0284.JPG</a>

We were saying that the latter has more of a Santa Cruz Boardwalk feel to it than the original concept.

Especially the entrance to Ariels Grotto into the rock wall with the sign and all. I think they are trying to replicate the entrance into Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Only it seems MUCH cheesier.

The second one is ok, especially if we hadn't seen the 1st rendering, but it definately looks more Southern Cal (e.g. cheaper, less ornate and functional)

I hear you; but on the other hand, I still think the first one could have worked. In fact, the Avalon Cove building is kind of whimsical/fanciful, (though also based on a real building; in this case the Avalon Casino on Catalina) and with it on one end of the lagoon, and the LM building on the other, they could have kind of balanced each other.

I still do like the second version, and it will be a good addition. I just don't like it as well as the first.

I think it might even be a stretch to say that Avalon Cove was even inspired by the Casino, since there really are very few similarities.

However, I definatley agree about the spires matching each other nicely. That would be a nice way to detach the Pier from the rest of the park. If you have to walk past one of the 'fantasy' buildings on the way in, then it would sort of set the mood for the rest of the area as being less realistic, and more romanticized. than the rest of the park, which might be a good direction to go in.

With so much other work being done I can not see them starting on this until after the holidays.

I also think that the second version picks up on the architectural style of the Palace of Fine Arts dome, which incidentally was part of a World's Fair in San Francisco in 1915. A panorama view of some of the fair's buildings can be seen at the link.

Although it's fanciful, the center section of the building in the first concept drawing looks out of place with the Palace of Fine Arts dome to me.

I believe in some of the early promo pieces they say it was "inspired by," and obviously it had the "Avalon" name. It does look like a less stolid, more fanciful version, especially if you look at the area with the cupola as the center.

Yeah, that's what I thought, but I think that concept lost and the less fanciful one won out. I still like the second version, though.
