What was distracting, was cropping a bit at the top and bottom .. which is obvious in the opening credits.

Just side note about being lazy about properly framing "Academy" frame movies for projection. Last year .. I saw Singin in the Rain at the Regency theater across from South Coast Plaza Mall in Costa Mesa. Bloody idiots ... they took the "1.33:1" framing ... and cropped it to 1.85:1 .. severely cropping head shots ... Their response - "Oh well!" If I want to see a classic film again ... I won't be bothered with that two-bit theater in Orange County, ever again, who are too lax! - I'll go to a LA/Hollywood theater where they care to project them in their proper frame.

There are many movies meant to be viewed that way. If you got one week to see a classic film on the big screen .. and got some free time .. you don't let that pass you by.

I've driven to Burbank to avoid it. It is LITERALLY the most inept theater I've been to in Southern California, its only serious competition being the Regency Plant in Van Nuys, owned by the same company.

She loved the IMAX image and the details of the scarecrow's makeup, for instance. Hated the fact that the 3D made the painted backdrops even more obvious.

The 3D is just another support like lighting, color, costuming. It was not forced because it was not made that way. The scenes in the forests looked great. as did those in the Witch's Castle. Worst show was the long shot of the balloon in the Emerald City. Best shot was a long shot of the foursome walking down the long gothic hall to the wizard's chamber. The tornado scene was great. because of the huge screen it was somewhat terrifying and while the foreground was in 3D the background was not ( or was ver minimal) but it still looked awesome.

I kept thinking how incredible it was to know all the performers were real people and not computer generated . They all gave their heart and soul to this movie... and the little dog too! I hope you will take the time to see it on the big screen . Are there any movies that would motivate you to re-visit in 3D IMAX Theatres? I am thinking Fantasia.
