They did that with the original "Test Track", which was based on absolutely nothing. To a lesser extent they did it with Soarin', but I think that would have been a hit with or without promotion. Not so Test Track (in my opinion).

Take away the already modest physical sets, reduce the number of 'scenes', and turn the lights off, and apparently it's a guaranteed hit.

Disney's marketing machine was totally unable to make The Lone Ranger or John Carter popular. And I'm not familiar enough with The Disney Channel's lineup to comment, but surely not ALL their shows are doing well. >>And when they grew tired of Miley and her antics, they dropped her into oblivion<< Number 2 on the pop charts this week. That's some oblivion! http://www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100

It's not that surprising really and what you're talking about is just another example of the company pandering to its audiences as a pathway to building the Disney brand. Just ask any parent who has had kids in the "tween" demographic and they'll tell you that there was a rabid hunger for Disney Channel's brand of cheesy pop junk for the pre-MTV set long before Miley Cyrus or Selena Gomez hit the scene. Don't forget that Miley was preceded by Britney Spears, Christina Agulera, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Gosling and Fergie (yes Fergie). I don't dispute your basic argument though that Disney is being creatively lazy. That's true. However, no matter how much some of us hate it, it can't be denied that the formula for flipping the script and turning their parks into commercials for Disney brands seems to be working.
